What is a good typing speed? Real data from TypingTop
Most typing speed benchmarks online are estimates. The figures below come from real tests taken on TypingTop, with results flagged as cheating removed.
Compared with everyone who takes the test (58,517 tests in the last 7 days, October 2026):
| Typing speed | Level | Where it puts you |
|---|---|---|
| 60 WPM or more | Fast | Top 0.5% |
| 80 WPM or more | Very fast | Fewer than 1 in 1,000 |
| 100 WPM or more | Elite | Fewer than 1 in 1,000 |
Compared with people who practise regularly (5.4 million results saved by registered TypingTop users, October 2022 – October 2026):
| Typing speed | Where it puts you |
|---|---|
| 65 WPM or more | Top 25% |
| 85 WPM or more | Top 10% |
| 100 WPM or more | Top 5% |
| 129 WPM or more | Top 1% |
These figures are in line with independent research: the largest academic study of typing, run by Aalto University with 168,000 volunteers, measured an average speed of 52 WPM among people who use a computer every day. Reaching 60 WPM or more takes deliberate practice, and that is what moves people into the higher levels.
Accuracy matters as much as speed: the typical TypingTop user types with 95% accuracy or better. A fast score with many mistakes is not a real gain, so keep your accuracy above 95% as you push your WPM up.
Top typing speeds by language
You can take the typing test in more than 50 languages. Speeds are not directly comparable between languages, because word length and keyboard layouts differ, so here is what it takes to reach the top among regular users in some of the most popular ones:
| Language | Results | Top 25% from | Top 10% from | Top 1% from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | 303,062 | 56 WPM | 74 WPM | 119 WPM |
| Indonesian | 1,649,801 | 69 WPM | 91 WPM | 129 WPM |
| Vietnamese | 2,765,723 | 59 WPM | 74 WPM | 107 WPM |
| Bengali | 52,727 | 65 WPM | 85 WPM | 142 WPM |

How your typing speed is calculated
- WPM (net words per minute): the characters in the words you typed correctly, plus spaces, divided by 5 and then by the time in minutes. A "word" is counted as 5 characters, so long and short words are treated fairly. Mistyped words do not count towards your speed.
- Gross WPM: every keystroke divided by 5 and by the time in minutes, including mistakes.
- Accuracy: the percentage of words you typed correctly out of all the words you attempted.
Because only correct words count, slowing down slightly to avoid mistakes usually raises your WPM rather than lowering it.
Test length and text also matter. Very short tests (15–30 seconds) that use only common words without capital letters or punctuation usually give scores 10–20% higher than a 1-minute test like this one, so compare your results on the same kind of test.
How to read your result
After the test, your result page shows your net and gross WPM, accuracy and a speed level badge, from Beginner up to Grandmaster. It also shows where you lost time: an error heatmap of the keys you mistype, the words you missed and your slowest key pairs, so you know exactly what to practise next. The leaderboard shows how you compare with other typists.
Take the test a few times and look at your typical score, not your best one. It is a more honest picture of your everyday typing speed.
How to improve your typing speed
- Learn touch typing. Keep your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and use all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. Our free 10-finger typing lessons take you through it key by key.
- Aim for accuracy first. Above 95% accuracy, speed comes naturally. Below it, you spend your time correcting mistakes.
- Practise a little every day. Ten to fifteen minutes a day works better than one long session a week. The daily typing test gives you a new text every day.
- Practise the most common words. The top 1000 words make up most of everyday text, so typing them automatically gives the biggest gain.
- Challenge yourself with harder text. When the normal test feels easy, try the advanced typing test with punctuation and capital letters, or text practice with real paragraphs.
